Summary
Inspired and propelled by the Jewish mantra to "Never Forget", Rabin's thesis honors her ancestral past through reclaiming images, traditions and symbols. Through meticulous labor, she reclaims, preserves and archives her family history. The artist creates an alternative family tree, comprised of intimacy and understanding. Antique family photography is the substrate for her embroidery. She draws parallels between new life and new thread, thereby using thread as an important symbolic material. Cascading down photographs, the embroidery organically evolves into a mass of tangled life threads with a life of its own. Rabin, through repetitive gestures of embroidery and wrapping, forms a spiritual bond with her ancestors, and gains an appreciation for the history of fiber arts
