Summary
Challenging the concept that design must be unobtrusive and provide the user with the greatest possible convenience, the artist invites 13 pairs of people to interact with domestic space in a different way. Hauff creates a shelf in order to achieve this goal--the shelf is affixed to the wall by a single fulcrum, turning it into what is essentially a teeter-totter. The artist endeavors to understand a constraint she gives herself, which is to “take a piece of furniture and design in such a way that one has no other option but use it with caution”. Her work expanded on the concept of a shelf to that of an entire dining room set, where she observes the reactions and interactions of her audience
